Extract: Is This For You?

The following extract is taken from Ray Moore’s upcoming book- The Levels: Can Your Business Step Up to the Growth Challenge?

Type in the words ‘business growth books’ into Amazon (or any similar site) and you’ll get a staggering return of something like 46,000 results. Within this, you’ll find everything from weighty Financial Times business guides to scientifically focussed volumes on the language of management to your bulk standard ‘get rich quick’ guides.

If you’re looking at seriously growing your business, it could be very easy to spend a small fortune buying endless copies of these books, only to find out that none of them are really helpful for you and your business.

Personally, I have no wish to waste anyone’s time, so, let’s get straight to the point and find out if this is the right book for you.

First of all, this book is aimed at anyone who is currently building or managing a Small to Medium Enterprise (SME).

In Chapter 5 we will look in more depth at this definition and its sub-categories but at the moment let’s take it that this covers all businesses employing anything between 1 – 250 people. That’s a massive group! In fact, the latest statistics available (taken at the beginning of 2011) show there were some 4.5 million SME’s in the UK.

If your business is one of them, read on.

Secondly, this book is aimed at those of you who are starting to grow, or want to continue to expand your business.  Perhaps you have already achieved much of what you expected within your particular field and are now in a fairly comfortable position but have grown a little risk adverse. That’s great if you’re happy to stay in the comfy seat, but maybe you’re experiencing a nagging feeling that you have not yet achieved everything you wanted to in your business, that your aim is to reach a bit further. If this is the case then keep reading.

Finally, if you and your business seem to have reached a bit of a plateau and, no matter how hard you work or how many hours you put in, you’re struggling to break through to what you consider to be a bigger, higher level in your industry, then this book is also the right choice for you. If this is the case, your business is controlling you when surely it should be the other way round.

Basically, if none of this really applies, then stop reading right now, close this book and find something else to do with your time.

In case you’re in any doubt, let’s take a quick test.

Find somewhere quiet, away from any distractions, and ask yourself this question about your business and your future: In an ideal world, what kind of life do you envision and what is the size of your business?

Don’t worry for a moment about how you are going to do it and all the reasons why it can’t be done. If there were no restrictions and no fear of what the outcome might be, what would your business look like? Just get a picture in your head right now…. quick….. before reality kicks in!

Now answer this. Is the vision of your life and business much bigger than what you have now?

If the answer is yes then this is definitely the book for you and welcome to the Levels!

Even if, at this moment, you believe your dream is way out of your reach or feel there are too many obstacles in the way then try to put those thoughts aside. This book will help you break them down.

Before we move on to actually looking at the Levels and the ways in which you can move closer to where your vision lies, let’s get one thing clear. The vision you just created in your mind needs clarity to turn it into a commercial reality.

Throughout this book, we’ll be asking you to question every aspect of your business and challenge your way of thinking about it. The answers you come up with may not initially seem all that comfortable and, by the end, you may find that your idea of where you want to be is somewhat different from your original idea. Different or not, comfortable or not, what you will gain is a far greater understanding of what it is you actually want.

By the closing chapters of this book everything should start to seem very obvious.

That doesn’t mean now is the time to jump straight to chapter 11! Working through the Levels does require some work but the end result should be total clarity in your mind, a clear vision of the way forward and an understanding of the tools, techniques and resources you need to make that happen.
